Our Roots: A Legacy of Faith and Excellence (1973)
Angelo Christian School (ACS) was born in 1973 from a passionate group of parents determined to give their children not just top-tier academics, as well as deep spiritual grounding. From day one, ACS was more than a classroom, it was a place where students embraced Christian values, cultivated Biblical character, and engaged in a curriculum rooted in the Word of God. We envisioned our young people as ambassadors for Christ, ready to shine in their neighborhoods, cities, states, and beyond.
Guiding this vision were steadfast leaders like founding board member Ermie Hensel, a seasoned educator whose wealth of knowledge in teaching, from Illinois classrooms to Texas public schools, infused our early years with practical wisdom. He served faithfully from inception until his passing in 2010, helping steer ACS through its private phase and into the charter era. Joined by dedicated board member Tommy Olive, who has served continuously since our founding in 1974, these pillars exemplify the unwavering commitment that has defined us.
Milestones in Growth and Accreditation
In 1997, ACS formalized its commitment to Christian education by becoming a non-profit corporation, a structure that endures today under TLC Academy. This pivotal step amplified our reach and resources.
By November 2003, we earned accreditation from the Accrediting Commission International, Inc., affirming our high standards in faith-integrated learning.
A New Chapter: Becoming TLC Academy (2005)
In 2005, ACS evolved into TLC Academy, embracing a Bible-centered philosophy that partners closely with parents. Drawing from Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go". We have been committed to teamwork with families, nurturing each student's social, academic, and spiritual potential to the fullest.
Expanding Horizons: Charter School Innovation (2008–Present)
Our momentum peaked in 2008 when TLC Academy received charter school status from the Texas Education Agency, launching Texas Leadership Public Schools (TLPS) in the 2009–2010 school year. What began as a single vision has blossomed into a network spanning five vibrant cities (San Angelo, Midland, Arlington, Abilene and Cedar Hill) across Texas.
At TLPS, our mission is to empower every student to embody leadership as a lifelong calling. We deliver this through advanced, innovative learning experiences that challenge minds, enrich hearts, and transform classrooms into launch pads for individual growth.
